Paying for home care for Fort Carson families: Fountain and the springs
Four things pay for home care around Fort Carson, and each deserves the honest version rather than the hopeful one. Private pay at published numbers: $40 an hour on this south side, three hours as the smallest visit, live-in care flat at $650 a day. The funded layer, the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging, Fountain Valley Senior Center, Silver Key and the county veterans office, carrying programs, rides, meals and claims work at little or no cost.
The third is long-term care insurance, when the policy and the paperwork finally agree. The fourth is the military side: TRICARE through Evans, VA benefits through the Lindstrom clinic and the county's accredited officers, each following its own rules and its own clock. We promise no coverage from any of them. What we do is check it with you, free, at (303) 757-1777.
Colorado CareAssist is family-owned and non-medical, dementia-trained caregivers matched on skills and personality, no long-term contract, and after the 20-minute call a free assessment in the home or by video.
Private pay, in whole numbers
A planned month costs exactly what it costs. Four visits in a month, three hours each, one weekly visit, totals around $480 at the $40 rate. Eight visits land near $960; twelve near $1,440. The live-in alternative replaces all of that arithmetic for the stretch when nights rule the day: $650 a day flat, one trained person from dinner through breakfast.
The three-hour floor is a quality rule, not a cash register: a block that holds a wash, a meal, the medication reminders and the loop at Metcalfe Park is a different event than a clipboard check-in. Whatever quote you collect, ours included, insist it is written before the first visit, weekend, holiday and mileage lines visible. And in this ZIP code, ask the question the other families forget: exactly what does the invoice do when the schedule changes on orders?
The funded layer, front to back
Begin at the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging: (719) 471-2096, 14 South Chestnut, weekdays 9 to 4. The caregiver supports, the ombudsman, senior information and assistance and insurance counseling are all free; nothing is charged and donations are optional. Then Fountain Valley Senior Center (719-600-2644) for the programs and events, and the same building for the city's contracted ADA paratransit desk (719-600-2643).
Food and wheels come from Silver Key (719-884-2300): Meals on Wheels for anyone 60+ with no income screen, $9.75 a meal privately or a suggested $3.50 when income-qualified, and Reserve & Ride at a suggested $5 with a week's notice. Claims help comes from El Paso County Veterans Services (719-520-7750), accredited officers filing disability, education and survivor claims free. And 211 (2-1-1, or 719.955.0742, specialists weekdays 8 to 5 across 12 counties) exists for every door this page could not predict. Groceries on the south side run through the same logic: the south-Academy Safeway does DriveUp & Go and delivery and takes SNAP EBT online, and on post the commissary's CLICK2GO desk is (719) 407-8321.
TRICARE: ask, on both sides of the phone
TRICARE governs coverage for enrolled family members, and the referral machinery runs through Evans Army Community Hospital (719-526-7000). Whether non-medical in-home help attaches to any specific benefit depends on the case, the plan and the authorizations, and nobody inside or outside this agency can honestly promise a yes in advance.
So schedule the ask instead of guessing: at Evans, put to the case manager exactly what the plan covers for in-home, non-medical help, and which orders and visit notes their side wants to see. Bring that answer to the free call at (303) 757-1777 and we will price the paid hours against whatever gap survives. If no gap survives, you will hear that from us too; it is the cheapest outcome on this page.
The VA side, and two questions that expose an agency
For enrolled veterans the local door is the PFC Floyd K. Lindstrom VA Clinic, 3141 Centennial Boulevard in Colorado Springs (its own page prints no main phone; the county veterans office at (719) 520-7750 can route), with the Eastern Colorado system's medical center behind it at 1700 North Wheeling Street in Aurora.
Colorado CareAssist is a VA Community Care Network provider, so when a veteran's determination supports in-home help, the hours can be arranged through the VA's structure instead of private pay. Two cautions families learn far too late. The eligibility determination is the VA's alone and moves slowly, which makes the filing date the whole game; and any agency's fluency in that world is exposed by two direct questions, are you a Community Care Network provider, and will your visit notes hold up for a reviewer who was never in the room.
Long-term care insurance: the folder is the claim
Policies differ with each other on elimination periods, on what mix of daily-activity failures opens benefits, and on whether a cognitive diagnosis by itself qualifies. They agree on one point: they pay for documented care, not remembered care. Diagnosis paperwork, statements from the physician, dated notes about the bad weeks, visit records an adjuster can follow. That stack is the gap between a paid claim and a brochure.
We help families put long-term care insurance to work, and we say out loud when the paperwork will not support what the salesperson implied. If a claim stalls, a free second opinion exists at the AAA's senior insurance counseling desk, (719) 471-2096, belonging to no agency, this one included.
Cheaper weeks without cutting care
Stretch the purchased hours by anchoring them to the valley's own rails. The Connector is free for the household's military members and family. Fountain Municipal Transit charges $0.85 reduced fare for seniors and active military (deviations 48 hours ahead at 719-392-3500, exact cash, weekday-only service). Silver Key rides ask a suggested $5. The Saturday market at Metcalfe Park costs nothing to walk, and the library at 230 South Main St. is a free morning. A caregiver hour built around that architecture buys a bigger week than the same hour dropped into an empty one.
Weather is a budget line here, not scenery: the Springs area takes 32.5 inches of average snow, March heaviest, and CDPHE's wildfire season runs May through September. Those are the weeks the walk dies or the windows seal, when the free layer usually cannot reach and the paid hours matter most. Pre-plan both in the calm week: the shoveler, the clean room with its MERV 13 filter, and, if ice or illness wins anyway, the civilian emergency door most of these families drive to, UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central at 1400 E. Boulder Street (719.365.5000), is the one the added hours get bought against.
When the arithmetic still does not close
If private pay plus the funded layer plus insurance plus the military doors still leaves a hole, the remaining real door is long-term Medicaid planning. That is a county conversation, through El Paso County DHS at (719) 636-0000, whose Fountain EBT desk sits inside the Peak Vista clinic at 350 Lyckman Dr. We are not financial advisors and will not pretend to be; but a good first call ends with those numbers handed over in order anyway.
And the first call is still free: (303) 757-1777. Twenty minutes, a written quote at the end, $40 an hour, a three-hour minimum, $650 a day live-in, plus the honest monthly total for the household that actually lives east of the gates. In a community that runs on plans, arithmetic is the only pitch worth making.
One line before the arithmetic, because money stress stops being arithmetic at 2 a.m.: Colorado Crisis Services is free at all hours (844-493-8255; text TALK to 38255), and where the diagnosis is tangled in the budget fight, the Alzheimer's Association helpline (800.272.3900) answers without ever mentioning a price.
