Respite care for Fort Carson families: Fountain and the springs
Around Fort Carson a family's week answers to two bosses. The Army's calendar moves first, a field exercise that stretches, a deployment notice, a relocation order to a state where the parent knows no one, and the caregiving calendar absorbs the hit with no slack built in. Respite here means cutting that slack on purpose, this month, instead of waiting for the week that forces it.
The funded layer in the Fountain Valley is unusually complete: the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging holds the region's caregiver supports, Fountain's senior center runs both programs and the city's paratransit, Silver Key carries meals and rides, and 211 sweeps up whatever the others miss. What none of them covers, the random Tuesday at 6 p.m., is precisely where paid hours belong.
Colorado CareAssist is family-owned and non-medical: on this south side of Colorado Springs the rate is $40 an hour on visits of at least three hours, live-in care runs a flat $650 a day, and there is no long-term contract on the table. One free 20-minute call opens the plan: (303) 757-1777.
First call: the Area Agency on Aging
The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging, 14 South Chestnut in Colorado Springs, is the designated aging office for El Paso, Park and Teller counties; dial (719) 471-2096, weekdays 9 to 4. Its service list reads like a respite map: the Family Caregiver Support Center, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Senior Information and Assistance, senior insurance help, mobility coordination. The pricing, from the agency's own page: nothing charged, no one refused over an empty wallet, donations optional.
Its parent council sits two doors down at 15 South 7th Street, (719) 471-7080, weekdays 8 to 5. For the spouse who arrived in Colorado last spring and has somehow become a caregiver, and a large share of households near any post are new to the state, this single call replaces a season of guessing which county office owns which program.
The center with two phone numbers
Fountain Valley Senior Center at 5745 Southmoor Drive is the host community's older-adult hub, 719-600-2644, [email protected]: meals, events, activities, transportation. The City of Fountain separately contracts that same center for ADA paratransit, and that booking desk is 719-600-2643, so a center morning and the ride to it live one phone number apart. There is no equivalent program on the post itself; the Army's recreation pages list no older-adult facility.
For the caregiver, the real product is the absence: three or four hours when the parent is somewhere known, among people who would immediately notice an empty chair.
Wheels on post: the Carson Connector
The Carson Connector is free on-demand microtransit built by an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Fountain and the installation, listed on the Army's own page: Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 9:30 to 6:30, dark on major holidays. Riders have to be military members, their family (a family member rides unaccompanied from age 12), Army civilians or contractors; hails go through the Ride Fountain Transit app, and the city also prints 719-322-2007.
Pickup points named by the city include housing areas, the barracks, the South Academy Highlands shopping center and Pikes Peak State College, with a fleet of up to eight vehicles and one ADA-compliant van. Translated for the household: a 12-year-old can legally take a grandparent to a shopping run, free, while the parent sleeps off a night duty.
Wheels off post: three systems, one folder
Fountain Municipal Transit is a deviated fixed route, roughly 4:55 a.m. to 8:10 p.m. on weekdays, no weekends, no service on nine listed holidays. Fares: $1.50 adult, $0.85 reduced for ages 6-11, Medicare holders, disabled riders, seniors 60+, students and active military or veterans, and a 31-day unlimited pass at $54.00. The rules nobody reads: deviations are booked 48 hours ahead at 719-392-3500, and drivers take exact cash or a pre-purchased ticket, no change, no card payment.
For trips into town, Mountain Metropolitan Transit (customer service 719-385-7433) runs the two routes whose names cover these neighborhoods, 32 Security-Widefield and 15 E Fountain, with buses weekdays 5 a.m. to 10:15 p.m., Saturday from 6, Sunday 6 to 6:30, and its Metro Mobility service as ADA paratransit. None of that crosses the gates; only the Connector does. That is the one transit fact a Fort Carson family should never have to discover at midnight.
Meals with a built-in knock
Silver Key's Meals on Wheels serves every senior 60+ in its area with no income screen: up to seven or more meals per weekly delivery at $9.75 each privately, or a suggested $3.50 donation for income-qualified clients. Enroll and confirm the address at 719-884-2300, weekdays 8 to 5. Two pieces of fine print that matter on a military calendar: the delivery window is fixed at sign-up rather than renegotiated each week, and moving a delivery asks 48 hours' notice, so build the week around the standing window, not around exceptions.
Silver Key's Reserve & Ride, the same number, books at least a week ahead for anyone 60+: rides run 8:30 to 4, a suggested $5 contribution, no one denied for inability to pay, in ADA-accessible vehicles with lifts that carry wheelchairs, walkers and oxygen tanks. One honest caveat from the source pages: the service area is described as the Pikes Peak region without naming Fountain or Security-Widefield, so verify the ZIP before planning a week on it.
One more number saves a drive when the week is already full: the county DHS EBT desk sits at 350 Lyckman Dr inside the Peak Vista clinic (719-636-0000, weekdays 7:30 to noon and 1 to 4:30), and the free thing to do with the parent, instead of another paid hour, is the Saturday market at Metcalfe Park, 8 to 2 from late May through September.
Paid hours, priced like a schedule
The free layer owns days, rides, meals and counseling. Nobody in it owns the 6 a.m. wash before duty, the sundowning hour during a deployment, or the overnight when the house is down to one adult. Those are bought hours, and the buying is plain arithmetic at $40 an hour with a three-hour floor: a single weekly visit lands near $480 a month, two visits weekly near $960, three near $1,440, and the live-in stretch, dinner through breakfast, is the flat $650 a day.
No contract holds any of it in place. Hours shrink during the week the unit exercises, grow the week the parent leaves the hospital, and end when the family relocates with orders. That elasticity is the entire point of arranging help near a base, and it is a question worth putting to every other agency on the shortlist too.
The worst-night numbers
If the caregiver's own head goes somewhere dangerous at 1 a.m., Colorado Crisis Services is free and staffed at all hours: 844-493-8255, or text TALK to 38255. If the worry is about the disease rather than the despair, the Alzheimer's Association helpline, 800.272.3900, answers any hour of any night. Both belong on a card in the kitchen drawer with 211, the Pikes Peak referral line (2-1-1 or 719.955.0742; specialists weekdays 8 to 5; food, housing, utilities, transportation and mental-health connections across 12 counties; office at 518 North Nevada Avenue, 719.632.1543).
Veterans in the family add one more desk: El Paso County Veterans Services at 5850 Championship View, Suite 130 (719-520-7750, weekdays 8 to 4:30 with an appointment, [email protected]). Accredited officers there file service-connected disability, education and survivor claims free of charge, and the office runs claims clinics out in places like Calhan.
The break, built in order
Assemble it once, in sequence. Register the household with the AAA at (719) 471-2096. Call 719-600-2644 for the senior center calendar and 719-600-2643 for the paratransit desk. Confirm the address with Silver Key at 719-884-2300 for meals and Reserve & Ride. Load the Connector app, or save 719-322-2007, before the ride is ever needed. Then buy a single three-hour paid block on the day the week historically breaks, not the day after it already has.
If that block deserves real numbers before anyone commits, the free call exists for exactly that: (303) 757-1777, and the person who answers will walk you through every county, city and installation number on this page whether you ever book an hour with us or not.
