Respite care for family caregivers in Canon City, CO

On Main Street the Golden Age Center keeps a Koffee Klub hour every weekday morning, a roomful of the same faces at 9 a.m. What no senior center in Canon City can supply is somebody standing in your own kitchen at six the next morning. That gap is filled by a family caregiver, and nobody hands that person a note when the hours run out. Respite is the fix: a stretch where someone else carries the responsibility, so you can sleep, keep your own appointment, work a shift, or sit through a Friday-night dance at the center without checking your phone between songs.

Colorado CareAssist brings non-medical home care to Canon City and the towns around it. Here respite usually takes one of two shapes: a three-hour visit at $40 an hour, which clears a genuine morning or a genuine afternoon, or a live-in day at a flat $650 when someone needs the whole night rather than a slice of it. Caregivers are matched by skill and temperament, we write no long-term contracts, and the starting move is a free 20-minute phone call, then a free in-home assessment at the house or on video. Neither one obligates you. The line is (303) 757-1777, and it reaches a person, not a machine.

Here is what a real week off in Canon City involves, including the parts that cost nothing.

Three hours is a workable unit of time

Three hours is our floor on a visit, and families booking respite nearly always want the same slot back each week rather than scattered single hours. Two mornings from nine to noon, or one long Saturday, is a rest you can post on the refrigerator. The person arriving is someone you have already met and named. That foreknowledge is the whole reason the block gives anything back; an improvised sitter is not a respite.

Planning talks start with the week's shape, not an hour total. Say where it snaps. Maybe the Thursday specialist run that crosses the county line. Maybe the evening nobody in the house stays upright through. Maybe the single Saturday morning a spouse needs to be anywhere that is not inside a caregiver's radius. From what you tell us we can propose hours that take the pressure off instead of hours that simply relocate it to the next room.

The second shape is live-in. A flat $650 a day puts a caregiver inside the house overnight rather than visiting it, which fits a household where one person works nights, travels for work, or is mid-recovery from her own surgery. Hourly help in Canon City is $40 with the three-hour floor, so you can price the two arrangements against each other honestly, and we will quote either without attaching you to it.

The county runs its own respite program

The Area Agency on Aging for Fremont County is run by UAACOG, covering Chaffee, Custer, Fremont and Lake counties. The office is at 6266 Cleora Road in Salida, phone (719) 539-3341, open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eligibility is any person 60 or older residing in those four counties, which covers everyone in Canon City.

Its AAA Caregiver Respite program provides 8 hours per month of relief, paid at $24.00 per hour to the provider, with proof of income required. Check current program terms before you count on it. Eight hours is one morning or one afternoon a week, and for many families that is exactly the hole in the schedule.

The same office runs AAA In-Home Services, homemaker and personal care for acute, short-term needs, at $24.00 an hour, up to 48 hours over six weeks. If the person you care for is coming home from a procedure and you cannot get off work for the first two weeks, that six-week window is built for precisely that.

Getting out of the house without a second job

Fremont County Transit is operated by the Golden Age Center and books rides by phone at 719.276.5200. The system is curb-to-curb, open to the public, and covers all of Fremont County. Local in-county rides are a $4 suggested donation, and a 10-ride punch card is $35. Confirm the current phone and fares when you book.

Demand is heavy, and the operator asks for at least 24 hours notice to schedule rides; same-day rides generally cannot be scheduled. Service runs on weekdays, and Canon City has no fixed-route bus, because the city's 2021 comprehensive plan describes Fremont County Transit as the door-to-door shuttle serving Canon City, Florence and Penrose. Put the ride request on the calendar the day before the appointment, not the morning of it.

Out-of-county rides are provided for medical appointments only, with fares of Pueblo $60, Colorado Springs $65, Salida $65 and Denver $110. The service is also a non-emergency medical transportation provider with Health First Colorado, the state Medicaid program. Veterans ride at a reduced rate, per the operator's page, so ask about it when you book.

Where a free afternoon actually goes

From late spring into fall, the Canon City Main Street Farmers Market fills the 500, 600 and 700 blocks of Main Street every Thursday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with fifty or more vendors. Check current season dates before you plan around it. Walking the stalls with someone, buying one peach, and driving home again fills an hour without requiring anything of the person you care for.

About 15 miles west, the Florence Farmers Market meets at Pioneer Park every Thursday through the last Thursday in September, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., also with its season dates worth confirming. Two towns, two markets, one weekday rhythm to choose from depending on who is driving and how the morning went.

Back at the Golden Age Center, the schedule lists Movie Night every third Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Friday Night Dances on the first and second Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Membership is $25 a year per person and events are open to the community. A Friday dance at the senior center is a low-stakes way to be somewhere with other people, which is a different thing than being entertained.

Lunch is already handled on some days

The Area Agency on Aging lists two congregate meal sites in Fremont County. The Golden Age Center in Canon City, (719) 345-3064, serves Monday through Friday, and the Florence Community Center, (719) 784-6493, serves Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Check current days and phones before you rely on either. The GAC lunch program provides lunch for anyone 60 and up with an assessment form on file with the Area Agency on Aging.

If the respite block lands at midday, this is the part of the plan that solves itself: the person eats a real meal with other people, and the caregiver's hours belong to something else. The Golden Age Center sits at 728 Main Street, and its weekly schedule includes Koffee Klub Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m., so a lunch visit can start with coffee and end at home in the early afternoon. Check current days and times when you call 719.275.5177.

What to do with a whole free Saturday

A weekday block solves work. A Saturday solves the household. Laundry that has been stacking since October, a pharmacy run, the dentist appointment the caregiver stopped making for themselves two years ago. Those are the errands a three-hour Saturday visit quietly pays for, and they are worth scheduling the same way a work block is scheduled, on a repeating calendar entry nobody has to renegotiate each week.

The Golden Age Center also lists pool, ping pong and a cooked lunch among its activities, plus day trips and excursions. A caregiver can take a client there for a morning while the family caregiver is across town being a person again, or the family can go together the first few times until the routine is familiar. Either way, the point is the same: the day runs without you, and it runs the same way next week.

Paying for the block of time

Cost, plainly: southern Colorado including Canon City sits at $40 an hour, no visit shorter than three hours, live-in at a flat $650 the day. If the household holds long-term care insurance, we will sit with you over the declarations page, because every policy is its own animal and guessing at a benefit wastes a week. Colorado CareAssist also bills through the VA Community Care Network, which is worth knowing the moment a veteran is in the house.

With no long-term contract in place, a month of help cannot silently turn into an obligation nobody agreed to. A pattern that tends to work: one afternoon each week, watched for how the house feels afterward, adjusted from there. When you want to start that way, phone (303) 757-1777. The free 20-minute consultation comes first and the in-home assessment, also free, follows it.
