Paying for home care in Canon City, CO

In Canon City, the month home care becomes a line in the budget rarely lands as one bill. It gets stitched from several directions at once: private pay covering the hardest hours, a policy that pays part, a county program that puts the ramp in, a veteran benefit nobody ever filed. What follows is the map as it actually exists here, without promises about what an insurer or a county will decide.

Our own numbers, up front. Colorado CareAssist bills $40 an hour in Canon City and the rest of southern Colorado, three hours being the shortest visit, and a live-in day costs a flat $650. Without a long-term contract, a family can open with two mornings a week and grow or shrink the plan as the situation moves, instead of committing to a term nobody can see the end of. Policies differ, but bring any long-term care insurance and we will read it with you and help file what the carrier wants. We are also a VA Community Care Network provider. Start with the free 20-minute phone consultation, then the free in-home assessment, no obligation either time. (303) 757-1777 reaches a person.

Here is where the rest of the money comes from.

Private pay, plainly

Run the arithmetic on paper. Two visits a week at $40 an hour, three hours to a visit, is a fixed figure a household can stare at before anyone says yes. Live-in care at a flat $650 a day is often the better arithmetic when a person would otherwise leave home solely because nobody can be in the house during the day. Because there is no long-term contract, a plan can be reduced or increased at the month's boundary rather than argued with for a year.

Families usually start with the block that removes the most pressure rather than the most hours. For some that is two mornings for bathing and errands; for others it is one long afternoon so a working adult child can stay at their job. The free in-home assessment is where that shape gets decided, because the useful answer depends on the house, the person, and who is already doing what.

Long-term care insurance

If a policy exists, find it. Policies differ in what they pay, when benefits start, and what proof the carrier demands. Our part in the insurance paperwork: sit down with the policy beside you, file whatever the carrier needs from us, and say plainly what we can and cannot document.

What a policy pays is the carrier's decision, not ours, and no honest agency should promise you otherwise. Bring the policy to the in-home assessment, or a photo of the declarations page, and it can usually be read in one sitting.

Veteran benefits, if there is a veteran in the house

Veteran households should know Colorado CareAssist works with the VA Community Care Network, so a veteran the VA authorizes for home care may be able to start there. Locally, the Fremont County Veteran Services Office sits at 615 Macon Avenue, Room 203, phone (719) 276-7400, staffed Mondays through Thursdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Fridays and holidays. The county asks for a phone call before you drive in, though the state roster also mentions walk-ins. Recheck those days before making the trip.

The county office also lists Honor Flight of Southern Colorado, with contact Misti Stowell at 719-637-7609, and Women Veterans Coffee Talk, a monthly gathering on the second Wednesday from 8 to 9 a.m. at the VFW Building in Canon City. Benefit paperwork goes easier after you have talked to someone who already filed it.

VA clinics in the region, by name and address: the Salida VA Clinic at 920 Rush Drive, Salida, 719-539-8666; the PFC James Dunn VA Clinic at 4776 Eagleridge Circle, Pueblo, 719-553-1000; and the Space Center VA Clinic at 565 Space Center Drive, Suite 130, Colorado Springs, 719-638-5000. Aurora's VA medical center, 1700 North Wheeling Street, anchors the system. No page we read states which clinic serves Fremont County, so ask the county office rather than assume.

County and state programs that shrink other bills

UAACOG's Area Agency on Aging runs a Chore Service that covers home repairs and yard work up to $600.00, and a Durable Medical Equipment program offering a $200.00 voucher for ramps and handrails, with an estimate needed first. Check current caps and terms. A ramp voucher is not home care, but it is the difference between a safe threshold and a fall, and falls are what send people back to the hospital.

The same office pays a transportation mileage reimbursement for medical appointments of up to $400.00 to qualifying seniors, with copies of a driver's insurance and license required. The office is at 6266 Cleora Road in Salida, phone (719) 539-3341, open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and serves anyone 60 or older in Chaffee, Custer, Fremont and Lake counties. Programs have income rules and waiting rhythms of their own; a phone call costs twenty minutes.

The county side of the ledger sits at the Fremont County Department of Human Services, 172 Justice Center Road, Canon City, phone (719) 275-2318, open 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; check current hours before you drive over. Its page lists the Public Assistance Program and Options for Long Term Care among its services. Options for Long Term Care is the county door to public programs that can pay for home and community-based services, and asking about it early is normal, not a last resort. A case manager there can explain what a parent's income and assets mean for eligibility in plain terms, which is a different conversation than the one an agency can have with you.

Food is its own line in the budget

The Golden Age Center began nutrition services in 1980, with its first congregate meal on January 9 of that year, and in 2024 it served over 25,000 meals, averaging about 100 meals per day, with the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments. The lunch program provides lunch at the center for anyone 60 and up with an assessment form on file with the Area Agency on Aging. Congregate sites in the county are the Golden Age Center in Canon City, (719) 345-3064, Monday through Friday, and the Florence Community Center, (719) 784-6493, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; check current days and phones.

Meals on Wheels of Canon City has delivered since its first meal on September 30, 1974, and its office number is (719) 275-8548, hours 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday; check current details. A delivered meal frees hours in a paid care schedule for the things only a person who knows the client can do.

When the math still does not close

The statewide switchboard is 211 Colorado. Dial 2-1-1, or call (866) 760-6489, text your ZIP code to 898-211, open a live chat in English or Spanish, or search the list yourself at search.211colorado.org. Their database carries information on more than 6,500 services backed by more than 2,500 agencies, across all 64 Colorado counties, border to border. Poke that text line on an ordinary afternoon so it is a known quantity before the week you actually need it.

When a budget genuinely does not work, this is the call that finds the pieces you have not heard of yet, from utility assistance to food programs to legal help.

What we charge, and what we do not promise

Once more in plain terms. Canon City pays $40 an hour, three hours is the shortest billable visit, and live-in care sits at a flat $650 a day. No long-term contract, dementia-trained caregivers, a free in-home assessment before anything starts. We will not pledge what an insurer, the VA, or a county program decides to pay. Those calls are not ours to make. Ours is a straight answer about our own numbers and a voice you can hear at (303) 757-1777.
