Respite care for family caregivers in Golden, CO

Nobody is going to drift into your house and spell you by accident. For a Golden caregiver the break usually looks like a Wednesday afternoon with the person you care for upstairs at the Community Center playing Pinochle over coffee, or one night of unbroken sleep, and both of those have to be scheduled like appointments if they are going to happen at all.

The town is better stacked for this than most. The Senior Resource Center across the city line in Wheat Ridge runs adult day programs, caregiver support, in-home help and free rides; the Denver Regional Council of Governments serves as Jefferson County's Area Agency on Aging; the city's own Front Porch fills weekday mornings; and the Ore Cart moves people around town with no family driver involved. Paid hours ride above that layer, never in place of it.

Colorado CareAssist is family-owned and non-medical. Blocks here are three hours at $43 an hour, live-in care a flat $650 a day, no long-term contract. The first call is free and it reaches a person: (303) 757-1777.

Two numbers open the funded door

Jefferson County says it in its own documents: the Denver Regional Council of Governments is the county's Colorado Area Agency on Aging. Pick up the phone for 303-480-6700 and you reach options counseling, benefits information and caregiver support for adults 60 and over, adults with disabilities 18 and over, and the families propping them up, much of it free or low-cost. Make that call in the week the diagnosis lands. These programs run on their own calendars and waitlists, and being on the list while the situation is still yellow is worth hours later.

When a plan needs a caseworker attached to it, DRCOG's Older Adult Case Management desk answers at 303-480-6704. That is where individual plans actually get built, one on one, money and services and next steps in the same conversation.

The Senior Resource Center, one phone call away

Golden's own senior-services page lists the Senior Resource Center at 303-238-8151: the nonprofit that helps older adults stay safe and independent at home longer, keeps an Adult Day Center so people stay engaged with their community, and backs up caregivers directly. Its program desk numbers are short enough to write on one card: care management 303-235-6923, non-medical in-home help 303-235-6976, free-of-charge chore work 303-235-6952, adult day and respite programming 303-235-6961. Ask SRC what the day program costs your household rather than guessing; the contribution terms are theirs, not this page's.

Then the piece that decides whether any of it happens: the ride. SRC's no-cost transportation runs weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and needs booking three to seven days out; the urban Jefferson line is 303-235-6972. The caregiver who books Thursday's ride on Monday is the difference between respite that happens and a brochure in a drawer.

The Front Porch is the free half day

Upstairs at 1470 10th Street, the Front Porch opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., phone (303) 384-8130, coffee on, cards out, mostly drop-in. The city's published programming, senior-designed exercise, Mah Jongg, Pinochle, Bridge, reading groups, is the social half of any respite plan, and the pools and indoor track in the building below cover the days the creek path is frozen or smoky.

Say the limitation plainly: the Front Porch is recreation, not supervision. Once dementia moves past mild, the staffed version is SRC's adult day program across the city line, which takes people with a range of needs and pairs with the ride desk above. Plenty of Golden households run both, the porch while they can, the day center when they cannot, and paid hours for everything neither one covers, the bathing, the evening, the overnight.

Rides that need no family driver

For a resident who cannot use the fixed bus because of a disability, the city points to RTD Access-a-Ride at 303-299-2960: shared-ride service for any purpose, reserved anywhere from one to seven days out, never the same day, and it reaches addresses within three-quarters of a mile of a fixed route. Book it the way you would book weather, early and with a plan B.

For outings where the ride is the point rather than the necessity, the Ore Cart is free, accessible, and the city's own shuttle since 2023, running three routes that tie downtown Golden to its north and south neighborhoods. On market Saturdays it extends to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the Gold Route stopping at the farmers market. A caregiver who teaches a still-capable person to take the cart for coffee on Washington Avenue is buying the household independence, not only a break.

Food, heat, and money the city hands back

The eating layer is thick here. Volunteers of America's Meals on Wheels runs Monday-through-Saturday routes across Jefferson County for households 60 and over, no charge, contributions requested, nobody refused for an empty wallet; the eligibility line is 303-294-0111. And the city names Hunger Free Golden, 303-279-2188 x 1004, as the single front door to every pantry and food-delivery option within Golden, worth calling before the month shopping stops working.

Two municipal savings sit on the senior page, too: LEAP winter heating assistance at 303-866-5700, and Golden's own sales-tax refund for residents 65 and over (prorated) plus low-income and disabled residents, the catch being 90 consecutive days of city residency and the claim contact (303) 277-8770. A refunded month of sales tax is not charity. It is a couple of respite hours the household kept by accident.

One more food habit before the crisis instead of after it: from late May to early October, the Saturday farmers market at 10th Street & Illinois takes SNAP with Double Up Food Bucks, the Gold Route of the Ore Cart pulls up beside it, and a caregiver who can ride over with someone, once, in good weather, has built the one errand in this town that doubles as an outing. When the kitchen stops working, that is the first door to know, ahead of the one where a stranger hands over a frozen plate.

Saturdays have no front desk

Every funded program above shuts at 2 p.m. or waits for Monday. The day center is a weekday thing, the Front Porch closes early afternoon, and a sundowning evening does not care what the calendar says. The honest weekend stack in Golden is family, a neighbor, and paid hours: a Saturday-evening block of three hours at $43 an hour is how one spouse gets to a kid's game and comes back to a house that got through dinner.

For the stretch where nights rather than weekends own the household, the pacing, the 3 a.m. door checks, the partner who has not slept in one piece for a year, live-in care is the flat $650-per-day answer: one trained person who reads dementia well, in the building from evening to morning, and the family off duty long enough to remember who they were before.

The plan that fits on one card

The order that works: register with DRCOG AAA at 303-480-6700, and with Older Adult Case Management at 303-480-6704 if the plan needs a person; call SRC at 303-238-8151 for the day program, chore help and the ride desk; put Front Porch mornings on the calendar; enroll for VOA meals at 303-294-0111 while things are still yellow; then buy the paid block that lands on the day the week actually breaks. All of it on one card, and that card lives on the counter, not in a binder.

If you want the paid arithmetic before deciding anything, that is what the free 20-minute call exists for: (303) 757-1777, a real person, no obligation. We will hand you every free number on this page whether you ever hire us or not.
